More and more often sewers of our big cities overflow pouring millions of liters of dirty water in the environment. The big cities which have this problem today already used their current sewers for more than two centuries. 

Cities like London and Chicago started building their sewage systems in the XIX century. This was revolutionary as it allowed cities to get rid of dirty water and rainwater and street litter. The population of these cities increased significantly since their sewers were constructed. More people produced more waste but this is not the reason for the overflowing. 

Mostly due to global warming today we are observing more severe storms more frequently. Storms that are pouring more rainwater. Sometimes the water is so much that the sewers cannot handle it and overflow. 

It is unlikely these mega-storms will disappear any time soon so there are some things we can do to prevent sewer overflowing from happening. Separating dirty water from rainwater is a solution for cities that are currently being built. Cities with already existing sewers invest in more city parks with vegetation that can absorb more rainwater.

The sewers of our cities are overflowing.
