Often we think of evolution as a slow process that can take millions of years to happen. And this is true up to a point. Most of the living organisms today are products of tens of millions of years of evolution. But under certain conditions, species can undergo significant changes for short periods.

Our big cities are the perfect place for trying out new genetic combinations. For example, since the XIX century, our buildings progressively have been getting higher. With their glass facades, they present a lethal obstacle for most birds, but scientific studies suggest some birds have developed genetic mutations that help them spot and avoid glass buildings. This change does not seem significant, but the difference between having it or not is the difference between having an offspring or not.

Plants are not falling behind too. In Paris, from several years, a new mutation of weeds can be seen. They have heavy seeds whose purpose is to land near the mother plant. These weeds can be found in ditches and if the seeds are carried by the wind may fall on concrete where they cannot germinate. Heavy seeds fall directly in the ditch where the mother is, and the offspring is guaranteed.

The fact that some species adapt and thrive in our cities does not mean anything particular. Lots of others are struggling due to our rapid expansion around the planet. Evolution might not be able to help all of them.
